Were You a Shawntay?
When we hit high school, in September of 1964, we formed our own girls social club. Some of us were impatient that we didn’t get into the Traviallers club our first semester of the 10th Grade. Others just refused to pledge. Either way we had to have the Lions Club sponsor us, in order to irritate the Trav’s.
The word Shawntay was an attempt by 15 year old girls to sound both elegant and groovy’. Enchante was the root word (blame freshman French). It made each girl ‘a shawntay’ or enchanted. Yellow and orange, our colors were that of the ‘sun’ being from Sunland California, they seemed most appropriate. We wore matching yellow sweatshirts, with the word Shawntays emblazoned on the back in orange.
Many of us have remained friends all these years, since our graduation from Verdugo Hills High in 1967. We have our own website shawntays.50megs.com. There are also very bad 60’s tunes playing on a synthesizer, in the background.
Sunland Tujunga in the 1960’s was isolated. Although part of Los Angeles County, it was much more like a small town. The nearest freeway was fifteen miles away.
The biggest event in town, every year, was the Watermelon Festival. It was a much anticipated event. Be there or be square.
The Shawntays, would always have a booth at the Watermelon Festival. We would wear our bright yellow and orange sweatshirts and sell 25 cent chances to win a teddy bear. Every teenage boy would come up to the booth and inquire, "Is this the kissing booth?" Each boy, sure he was the only one to make the joke, would then laugh shyly at his own amazing humor.
Some of the Shawntays attending the 2004 Watermelon Festival: Chris (Desautels) Douglas of New York City, Kathie (Kranig) Roush of Simi Valley, Lyn (Peters) Yuro lives at Channel Islands Harbor California and Chris (Beaver) Sylar living at Dana Point California.
All Shawntays interested in meeting up at the annual Watermelon Festival, can email lindatheshawntay@earthlink.net for more information.
