THE FERRIS WHEEL

The Ferris Wheel was built by bridge maker George Ferris in 1893 and was first seen at the Columbia Exposition in Chicago that same year.  It was created as a rival to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Ferris based his invention on the structure of the popular merry-go-round, but he created a vertical wheel rather than a horizontal design.  His idea was to make all other carnival rides small in comparison to his wheel.
The first Ferris Wheel was 264 feet tall, the diameter of the wheel was 250 feet and it was powered by a 2,000 horsepower engine.  It contained 36 wooden cars similar in design to a streetcar and it held 2,160 passengers.  A new group of passengers were put on board after two revolutions of the wheel.  The cost of 50 cents per ride.
