Watermelon Queen Contest Rules
It has been said that it takes money to make money. In August each year, it takes money to make a Royal watermelon Court - the Queen and King of the S-T Lions Club Watermelon Festival. The candidates and their sponsors have six weeks to sell as many tickets at $1 each as they can, and the candidate selling the most tickets in each age bracket usually wins the crown.
The contest officially begins on June 1st and ends on August 8, the Monday preceding the Festival.
A candidate for Queen or King must be a young woman or man 16 - 25 years of age who is of good character, available to be present at the Festival, and is sponsored by a charitable, service, educational, fraternal or non-profit organization or is raising funds for one. Candidates for Junior Queen or Crown Prince must be a teen who is 12 to15 years of age. All of the other qualifications also apply to them.
The Contest is a fund-raiser for the Lions Club and the groups and organizations raising money for service, community, education, religious and charitable purposes. The income from tickets sold by each sponsoring group and organization is divided evenly between the Lions Club and the sponsor or designated organization, providing a minimum of 300 tickets have been sold. If fewer than 300 tickets are sold, the entire amount will belong to the S-T Lions Club.
The deadline for turning in ticket stubs and money for the contest is August 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.. The queen and king will be crowned onstage at the Watermelon Festival on August 12.
Groups and organizations wanting to raise more money may continue selling tickets until 5 p.m. August 14. Ticket stubs and money may be turned in at the Festival headquarters at the Festival throughout the weekend.
The sponsoring organization or group receives their check from the Sunland-Tujunga Lions Club by August 31.
