Watermelon Festival Court 2008
Queen Brittany Elgin Verdugo Hills Family YMCA
Brittany is a Varsity Cheerleader at Golden Valley High School in Santa Clarita, where she is also a member of the Link Crew. She has a black belt in karate, loves to help animals, and likes sports.
"I would like to be the Watermelon Festival Queen because I have always seen and admired the queens when I was little and going to the Festival. I think it would be an honor to represent the Verdugo Hills YMCA and this community as the Queen. I think I would do a great job representing Sunland-Tujunga at various events throughout the year.
I want to raise money for the YMCA because I have grown up in the Y since I was a baby. It has been a very big part of my life and I have had some of my best times at the since my mom has worked there for 24 years."
Princess Ashley Lopez Verdugo Hills High School Varsity Football Squad
Ashley is a sophomore at Verdugo Hills High School. She enjoys modeling, acting and playing sports. In her spare time she loves running which helps her let go and relax. She has run in two marathons, and comments that "The feeling of accomplishment after a good run is like no other."
Spontaneous, loving and dedicated, Ashley is working very hard to become a model and an actress by attending Macker Entertainment every Saturday morning.
When she was younger Ashley volunteered as an altar server at Our Lady of Lourdes in Tujunga, and has grown up to be a young lady who stands up for her morals and beliefs. She enjoys finding ways to volunteer in the community.
She would like to be the Watermelon Festival Queen to help the Varsity Football Squad and to help the community.
Junior Queen Brina Allard Girl Scout Troop 820 and Boy Scout Troop 315
Brina Allard is a 10th grader at Chatsworth High School and is currently taking Algebra at at Pierce College. She plans on having her AA degree by the time she finishes high school, where she is in the Honors Program. She is also on the Varsity Girls Golf Team and the Swim Team, swimming all four strokes.
Brina is extremely active in all forms of community service. She donates all the Halloween candy she collectes to the children's wards at the hospital and volunteers her time to help at events for the Knights of Columbus at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Brina has been active in the Girl Scouts since she became a Daisy and is a member of Girl Scout Troop 820, a mixture of Brownies through Senior Girl Scouts. Her troop has a very close relationship with Boy Scout Troop 315. Both troops are sponsored by Our Lady of Lourdes; both troops are sponsoring Brina and will benefit from the money she raises.
"I am running for Watermelon Festival Princess because my mom was a Watermelon Princess when she was my age. I thought it would be fun since when I was little I always went to the Watermelon Festival with my grandparents Jack and Virginia Hodges, long-time residents of Tujunga. I always looked forward to the watermelon festivities and gatherings."
Junior Princess Heather Choi P.A.V.A. Pacific Asian Volunteer Association
Heather Choi is thirteen years old and is going to be a freshman at Polytechnic HS in Pasadena. Some of her hobbies include art and playing sports, especially softball, which she has been playing for at least three years. She likes to do enameling and ceramics during the school year. Every weekend, Heather volunteers with PAVA, the Pacific American Volunteer Association.
The money Heather raises will be donated to PAVA. PAVA volunteers participate in different types of events like the clean-up of the Los Angeles River. Recently Heather participated in the Griffith Park clean-up and thought it was really fun. There are many, many students who do this. Usually, the events take place on Saturday mornings. "I really want to be the Junior Princess this year because my sister did it last year and it looked like so much fun. I hope that I will be this year's Junior Princess and I promise to do my best."
